Integrated Report 2019 | PGE Capital Group

PGE takes up sustainability challenges

PGE measures and presents its contribution to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals. In the "Responsible Business in Poland 2019. Good Practices" report, we presented as many as 51 examples of such activities. As the first power utility in Poland, we also measured our impact on their implementation as part of the Impact Barometer.

Business and its activities play an increasingly important role in how we achieve our sustainable development goals from a global perspective. The importance of the participation of companies in this process is emphasized, among others, by The United Nations, which together with its member states in 2015 announced 17 key themes (SDG) necessary to be completed by 2030 so that we can recognize that our planet is developing in a sustainable way, i.e. safe for us and future generations. These goals focus on three elements: responsible economic growth, inclusive society and environmental protection.

The importance of business is also discussed at the national level. As part of the 17 Goals Campaign, a Council of 17 experts analysed which of the Sustainable Development Goals are key to be achieved by Polish business. You can read more about this on the 17 Goals Campaign page.

The Impact barometer (Polish Barometr wpływu)

The idea of the Impact Barometer was conceived in co-operation with the Central Statistical Office. 51 experts from 31 institutions were involved in its creation. The analysis of joint results of Polish businesses will allow to examine the progress in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals, which were selected by the Council of Seventeen. This is a group of 17 experts and key opinion leaders from various spheres: science, NGOs, public institutions, and businesses.

On the basis of a comprehensive analysis, the Council identified 6 areas (among 17 existing areas) as the priority Sustainable Development Goals for Polish business:

  • Goal # 3: Good health and quality of life
  • Goal # 4: Good quality education
  • Goal # 5: Gender equality
  • Goal # 8: Economic growth and decent work
  • Goal # 9: Innovation, industry, and infrastructure
  • Goal # 12: Responsible consumption and production

Using the predefined indicators the Impact Barometer tests how the company contributes to these six key areas. The joint result of Polish companies will be presented on the Campaign’s website.

PGE is the first and only energy company in Poland (as on March 31, 2020), which participated in the first edition of the Impact Barometer survey. It is a pioneering tool on the Polish market, used to measure the business contribution to the Agenda for sustainable development 2030.

Report with good practices

An important tool that shows what programs and activities are undertaken by companies in Poland as part of all 17 UN goals is the report „Responsible Business in Poland. Good Practices „. This layout of the report has been implemented since the announcement of the SGD goals, that is for five years, although the publication itself has an eighteen-year history. The report is the only comprehensive review of CSR activities undertaken by companies from various industries operating throughout the country. Its author is the Responsible Business Forum (FOB). In the 18th edition of the publication, there were 1 696 practices submitted by 214 companies. Every year, the announcement of the report is an important event. In 2020, due to the coronavirus pandemic – it was obviously moved to the network.

Our presence in this report is important because it shows the coherence of our activities and presents both in Poland and at the international level (the publication is also published in English) what sustainable activities we undertake. The report is a publication free of charge, also for companies reporting their activities. Each of the submitted practices is analyzed and verified by FOB experts. Only those practices that meet the criteria specified by the authors are finally included in the report.

For the second year in a row, PGE publishes the largest number of good practices in the „Responsible Business in Poland” report of all the companies participating in the publication. Last year, 48 verified practices of PGE were published, this year as many as 51.

Among the goals, the implementation of which is most often confirmed in the report by specific examples of PGE Group’s activities, is:

  • Goal #4 – Quality education
  • Goal #7 – Affordable and clean energy
  • Goal #8 – Decent work and economic growth
  • Goal #9 – Industry, innovation and infrastructure
  • Goal #11 – Sustainable cities and communities
  • Goal #12 – Responsible consumption and production
  • Goal #13 – Climate action
  • Goal #17 – Partnership for the goals

Although the idea of the authors of the publication is not to award places and distinctions for the number of qualified practices, for us, reporting the largest number of examples of responsible actions is very important information, which pleases us for the second year in a row.
